Interesting Facts About Horsham
General Info
Crawley became a parish in the sixteenth century, having previously been a chapelry in the parish of Slaugham. When district and parish councils were established under the Local Government Act 1894, Crawley was given a parish council and included in the Horsham Rural District. The parish was significantly enlarged in 1933, when it absorbed the neighbouring parish of Ifield.
History of Horsham
The first mention of Horsham was in King Eadred’s land charter of AD 947. The town had connections to the sale of horses and recent ideas suggest the name might be derived from “Horse Ham”, a settlement where horses were kept. None of this older descriptions that cover the Genealogy of the Shelley, Middleton and Michell families mention this derivation about horses. Just stating that it is likely linked to the mythical Saxon Horsa.
