Kind Words From Our Brides

I had the best experience at Lily Jacobs. I knew what I wanted but when I tried the dresses on they didn’t feel right. Tanya then pulled something I never thought of trying and I loved it! She wasn’t pushy and gave some really great advice. She was really welcoming and made me feel comfortable. If you are getting married I highly recommend going to visit her in the shop and have already sent a few friends her way!

Charlotte

From the moment we arrived, we felt very relaxed and welcome. Tanya has such a fantastic range of dresses to choose from and is second to none for both service and knowledge. She was very patient to let me try on as many dresses as I needed to, to find the right one. The choice she has is amazing. I would 100% recommend to everyone to go to Lily Jacobs to choose their dress.

Interesting Facts About Oxted

General Info

Oxted is a thriving town in Surrey, located at the foot of the North Downs and close to the border with Kent. It lies within the Tandridge district and benefits from a blend of countryside surroundings and strong transport connections to London. The town is divided into two distinct areas: Old Oxted, a historic village with timber-framed buildings and period charm, and the more modern town centre that developed around Oxted railway station in the late 19th century.

The Greensand Ridge runs to the south of the town, while the North Downs rise to the north, creating a scenic setting with access to open countryside, including Limpsfield Common and nearby Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Oxted benefits from a direct railway line to London Bridge and London Victoria, which encouraged its expansion as a commuter town from the Victorian era onwards.

History of Oxted

Oxted has ancient origins, with evidence of early settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The name “Oxted” is believed to derive from the Old English “Acstede”, meaning “place of the oaks,” reflecting the woodland landscape that once dominated the area.

The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Acstede” and was historically an agricultural settlement. During the medieval period, it was associated with nearby Limpsfield and developed gradually around farming and small-scale trade.

Significant growth occurred in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railway in 1884. This led to the development of the modern town centre and residential areas, transforming Oxted into a desirable commuter location while Old Oxted retained its historic character. Many timber-framed buildings along Old Oxted’s High Street date back several centuries and remain a key part of the town’s heritage.

Today, Oxted combines historic charm with modern amenities, maintaining a village atmosphere while serving as an important residential and commercial hub in East Surrey.
